Year 6 Boardwalk Canberra Camp

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
  • Canberra was fantastic. The bus trip was very long both ways, but we watched some movies on the way home which helped! We had a great time having fun with people we don’t normally play with. All of the students had a great time at all the places they visited.
  • Old Parliament House was awesome. We learnt so much about laws and the history of Parliament.
  • The AIS was amazing and we saw the Australian Volleyball team play a practice match and they were really good.
  • Questacon showed us how to have fun and learn at the same time.
  • The High Court was really interesting. We witnessed a case in action and had to bow to the judge!
  • At the war Memorial we lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. It was very emotional. Then everyone listened to a talk by Joe a Vietnam war veteran who shared interesting war stories.
  • The Canberra discovery centre showed us how Canberra was chosen to be the capital and who designed it.
  • We were very excited to go to the mint to see how money is made and get our own souvenir coin!
  • At Mount Ainslie we were lucky it was a sunny day and we were able to see all over Canberra.
  • Parliament House was a huge building and we saw lots of politicians. We met with Jo Ryan (our member for Lalor) and talked about what she does in Parliament. All of year 6 were able to act as politicians and make decisions. It was really funny.
  • Our favourite part was when we went to MADE and learnt how to vote correctly. We had fun voting in Apples as our Political Party.
  • We drove around and looked at all the Embassy buildings. They were huge and had lots of security guarding each place. The Australian Police waved to us in the bus!
  • When we went to the Art Gallery we saw amazing artworks and installations.
  • Our cabins were fun as was the Games and Movie night. The best was the last night. We had a talent show and all the acts were great. There were magicians, comedians, dancers and singers.
  • Canberra was a great experience.
